Sober Thought of the Day
“Laugh whenever you can. Keeps you from killing yourself when things are bad. That and vodka.”
― Jim Butcher, Changes

Today’s Saint
It is not the actual physical exertion that counts towards one’s progress, nor the nature of the task, but by the spirit of faith with which it is undertaken.
–Saint Francis Xavier

Psalm of the Day
Responsorial Psalm PS 19:8, 9, 10, 11

R. (9ab) The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.

The law of the LORD is perfect,
refreshing the soul.
The decree of the LORD is trustworthy,
giving wisdom to the simple.
R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.

The precepts of the LORD are right,
rejoicing the heart.
The command of the LORD is clear,
enlightening the eye.
R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.

The fear of the LORD is pure,
enduring forever;
The ordinances of the LORD are true,
all of them just.
R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.

They are more precious than gold,
than a heap of purest gold;
Sweeter also than syrup
or honey from the comb.
R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.

Sober Thought of the Day
“I’m a drinker with writing problems.”
― Brendan Behan

Today’s Saint
In prosperity, give thanks to God with humility and fear lest by pride you abuse God’s benefits and so offend him.
–Saint Louis IX

Psalm of the Day
Responsorial Psalm PS 19:2-3, 4-5

R. (5) Their message goes out through all the earth.

The heavens declare the glory of God;
and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
Day pours out the word to day;
and night to night imparts knowledge.
R. Their message goes out through all the earth.

Not a word nor a discourse
whose voice is not heard;
Through all the earth their voice resounds,
and to the ends of the world, their message.
R. Their message goes out through all the earth.

Sober Thought for the Day
“When ready, we say something like this: “My Creator, I am now willing that you should have all of me, good and bad. I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to you and my fellows. Grant me strength, as I go out from here, to do your bidding. Amen.” We have then completed Step Seven.” AA Big Book, page 76, paragraph 2

Willingness is key for me. How willing am I to do what needs to be done in order to change? When I first got sober, I was at the bottom. I needed a total transformation. I needed to change many things if I was going to live life in a whole new (sober) way. Now, each day, I can think of something I can change in myself. Something little. Like, how am I going to greet my spouse when he arrives home from work today? Number 9

Psalm of the Day
Responsorial Psalm PS 19:8, 9, 10, 15

R. (John 6:63b) Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life.

The law of the LORD is perfect,
refreshing the soul.
The decree of the LORD is trustworthy,
giving wisdom to the simple.
R. Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life.

The precepts of the LORD are right,
rejoicing the heart.
The command of the LORD is clear,
enlightening the eye.
R. Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life.

The fear of the LORD is pure,
enduring forever;
The ordinances of the LORD are true,
all of them just.
R. Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life.

Let the words of my mouth and the thought of my heart
find favor before you,
O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.
R. Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life.

Pride is an admission of weakness; it secretly fears all competition and dreads all rivals. Archbishop Fulton Sheen

Optimism and pessimism are mere matters of optics, of how you look at things, and that can change from day to day, or with a new prescription for your glasses — or with a new set of ideological filters. George Weigel, Letters to a Young Catholic

Sober Thought of the Day
“We should be sensible, tactful, considerate and humble without being servile or scraping. As God’s people we stand on our feet; we don’t crawl before anyone.”
― Alcoholics Anonymous

Humility and maintaining the proper balance between self-doubt and self-love is something that comes over time. By watching others in recovery navigate the peaks and valleys of life without despairing and without becoming puffed up has helped me model that behavior in my own circumstances. Number 9
